Tips & Tricks
how to dress
for family photos
Planning family photos should feel exciting — not overwhelming
One of the biggest questions I get as a photographer is:
“What should we wear?”
If you’re booking a family session with Lauren Mayes Photography, this guide will help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully, feel natural, and reflect your family’s personality.
TIP 1: Start with mom's outfit
I always recommend starting with mom’s outfit.
Why? Because when mom feels confident, the whole session flows better.
Look for:
Flowy dresses
Soft fabrics
Movement
Neutral or earthy tones
Colors that photograph beautifully in Oklahoma light:
Cream
Beige
Soft brown
Olive
Dusty blue
Rust
Muted mauve
(Avoid neon colors and super bright patterns — they reflect onto skin tones.)
TIP 2: Coordinate - Don't Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same white shirt and jeans.
Instead:
Pick 3–4 complementary colors
Mix textures (knit, denim, linen)
Vary tones slightly
Example palette:
Cream + tan + soft blue + light denim
Think “blended” not “identical.”
Tip 3: Dress for the season
Oklahoma weather can change quickly, so planning ahead matters.
Spring:
Soft pastels, light layers, breathable fabrics.
Summer:
Light neutrals, flowy dresses, short sleeves. Avoid heavy black.
Fall:
Warm earth tones — rust, mustard, olive, cream.
Winter:
Layered neutrals, sweaters, texture, long coats.
Tip 4: Think Movement - Not Still Posing
I focus on movement and connection — not stiff posing.
Outfits that allow:
Sitting on blankets
Walking through fields
Lifting kids
Snuggling close
Photograph best.
Comfort = confidence.
Tip 5: What to Avoid:
Neon colors
Large logos
Busy small patterns
Athletic shorts
Brand graphics
Super matchy outfits
If you’re unsure, send me a photo of your outfits laid out together — I’m always happy to help you style your session
A Final Encouragement:
Your family photos are about connection — not perfection.
Kids don’t have to be perfectly behaved.
Outfits don’t have to be designer.
Everything doesn’t have to match.
What matters most is the love between you.
When you book with me, I intentionally schedule only one session per day so your family, senior, or love story gets my full attention — no rushing, no stress, just beautiful golden hour memories.
I can’t wait to capture yours.
